The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is a part of the Department of Transportation headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices located across the United States. The NHTSA works closely with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), also a part of DOT to promote motor carrier safety. Their mission is "save lives, prevent injuries, reduce vehicle related crashes." Road Safe America and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have similar objectives. Stephen C. Owings of Road Safe America believes that we need to set aside a special day of the year to focus on driving safely. Road Safe America Is promoting Drive Safer Sunday every year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Making roads safer: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
(FMSCA) The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently did a study called The Large Truck Causation Study. The study revealed poor decision making on the part of the driver as the primary cause for accidents. Some recent studies from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration indicate the following changes in highway accident statistics between 2003 and 2004:
- Fatalities from large truck crashes increased from 4,986 to 5,169 in 2004.
- The number of fatal crashes involving young drivers (16-20) increased slightly (from 7,353 in 2003 to 7,405).
Road Safe America wants to reduce those above mentioned numbers and they have petitioned the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to set a limit to the top speed of large trucks. They want to have an operational speed governor on every truck to set at a maximum of 68 mph.
