Working Together Increases Truck Driver Safety
Road Safe America and much of the trucking industry are working together to improve truck driver safety. Road Safe America understands that limiting the top speed of tractor-trailer trucks promotes not only safer highways, but also solves many truck driving safety issues. We want a national rule that requires operational speed governors in trucks and top speed limitations, with serious consequences for violators. In what may be the first petition jointly filed by a public safety interest group and a group of motor carriers, Road Safe America and several fleets have petitioned Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to require speed governors to be activated at no more than 68 mph. This is a great way to make our highways safer and improve truck driver safety.

Common Ground: Truck Driving Safety
While we understand something must be done to boost truck driving safety, we also realize trucks are vital to our economy, and most drivers are careful and courteous. We stand by trucking companies who support our cause and are helping to improve safety. With this in mind, following are a couple of questions that come up frequently:
- Why do some trucking companies not use speed governors?
In some cases, trucking companies think they are more profitable by allowing trucks to travel at any speed. Our position is that all companies must do their work with truck driver safety in mind. - Would adding speed governors be a burdensome expense for truck drivers?
No. All tractor-trailer trucks that come equipped with governors, and safe drivers use them because they are aware of driving at safe speeds equates to truck driving safety. But too many truck owners don't use these governors, so they can travel as fast as they like. They do this at the public's expense.
